Company founded from the Auckland Programme for Space Systems. Problem identified, early technical approach defined. The founding team begin building what will become OutThere Astronautics around the conviction that optical inter-satellite links can solve the ground station bottleneck.
Early outreach to satellite operators confirmed appetite for on-demand contact capability. Market thesis validated. Conversations with constellation builders confirmed that the 85% dark time problem was real, widespread, and commercially painful enough to pay to solve.
Won the University of Auckland's flagship deep-tech startup prize. Accepted into the CIE VentureLab accelerator programme. OutThere gains its first institutional backing and advisory support.
First hardware prototypes of the Messenger module built. Ground testing of the optical inter-satellite link began. Initial market entry with early customer engagement. Fundraising rounds completed to fund flight heritage development. Team begins to grow with specialist engineering and commercial hires.
Working toward first flight heritage units with early integration partners. Engaging constellation operators for pre-launch agreements. The Messenger module enters its final hardware iteration ahead of the 2028 launch target. This is where we are now — building the last link between prototype and orbit.

Pavel is co-founder, CEO, and CTO of OutThere, leading engineering, operations, and the company's broader execution. With a Bachelor of Physics and Postgraduate Diploma in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Auckland, both focused on astrophysics, he brings hands-on satellite development experience from the Auckland Programme for Space Systems, where the foundations of OutThere were first laid. Pavel is passionate about space, engineering, and solving big-picture problems, and plays a central role in building the team and technology behind OutThere's vision for a new era of space communications.
Alex is co-founder and CSO of OutThere, leading the company's technology strategy and overseeing how technology supports the organisation's growth. With a background in psychology, he brings a systems-level perspective to technology, teams, and performance, with a natural ability to connect with and bring people together. At OutThere, Alex is focused on applying technology thoughtfully across the business to help turn vision into reality and help us plan our path forward.
Zac leads OutThere's systems integration and engineering, building on his background in mechatronics engineering and firmware development. As a foundational engineer at OutThere, he developed many of the core systems the company works from today and brings a broad understanding of how the technology fits together as a whole. Passionate about space, systems, and continuous growth, Zac is a key inventor behind OutThere's technology and plays a central role in turning its concepts into working systems.
James brings extensive aerospace experience across firmware, hardware, and systems engineering. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Software Engineering (Honours), Economics, and Finance, and was one of the earliest employees at Zenno Astronautics, where he worked across firmware design, superconducting R&D, and superconducting magnet design. He is particularly proud of developing magnets that progressed by multiple orders of magnitude in strength while remaining within demanding aerospace size, weight, and power constraints. Curious by nature and quick to learn, James brings a strong combination of technical depth and adaptability to OutThere.
Julia leads OutThere's operations, bringing experience in technology development, project management, and process improvement. She holds a BSc from the University of Auckland and spent five years at FNZ, a fast-paced global fintech company, working as a Development Lead. A former member of the Koios CubeSat team, Julia combines technical experience with a focus on people, strategy, and building efficient systems that help teams move quickly.
Zan supports OutThere's business and operations work, with a particular focus on business research, documentation, and patent-related work. Currently studying Law, Politics & International Relations, and Economics at the University of Auckland, Zan brings a multidisciplinary perspective spanning business, legal, and technical fields, alongside additional study in astrosciences and mathematics. An experienced debater and public speaker, Zan contributes strong research, communication, and analytical skills to OutThere's growing business operations.
Steven brings deep expertise in optics, lasers, and photonics to OutThere, with an M.S. in Photonics from UC San Diego and professional engineering certification in California. Previously a Senior Optical Engineer at ASML, he worked on EUV light-source laser systems, including laser system integration and operation for source research and the design of a free-space modulator for eliminating laser leakage interference. Passionate about photonics, optoelectronics, and the interaction of light and matter, Steven's experience in complex optical systems complements OutThere's engineering capabilities as the team develops next-generation free-space optical communications technology.
Francis brings extensive systems engineering and space hardware experience to OutThere, with a background spanning spacecraft integration, electronics, software, and advanced engineering. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Auckland and previously led engineering and future technologies at Zenno Astronautics. Francis was also a key member of the QuakeTEC CubeSat mission, leading spacecraft integration and testing and gaining hands-on experience across almost every aspect of the spacecraft. Passionate about complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects, Francis brings valuable New Zealand space industry experience and a strong focus on teamwork and knowledge sharing.
